Charities in East Texas benefited from the generosity of more than 2,475 donors during East Texas Giving Day, the region’s day of giving to support local nonprofits. The online fund-raising effort began at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, and ended at midnight. Based on preliminary results, donors contributed $755,428 to support the causes they care about in 32 East Texas counties. more

Tyler Junior College is now the home of the best speech and debate team among community colleges in the United States after winning two prestigious tournaments in April, school officials announced. TJC’s Speech and Debate team won the Phi Rho Pi National tournament April 9-14 after winning the American Forensics Association’s national tournament April 5-9 at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo. more
First graders at two local elementary schools were recently given free prevent tooth decay kits through the Fantastic Teeth Fan Club by members of Lindale Masonic Lodge, led by Kenneth Lottman, publicity officials announced. The Masons assembled and delivered more than 300 dental hygiene kits to first graders at College Street Elementary and Velma Penny Elementary schools. The Fantastic Teeth Fan Club, sponsored by Masonic Home and School of Texas, strives to prevent suffering from toothaches, reduce missed school days due to dental problems, and cut costs for dental treatment. more

In late April, the County Treasurers Association of Texas held its 46th annual Education Seminar in San Marcos. Each of the organization’s 12 regions nominates a County Treasurer for the Texas’ Outstanding County Treasurer Award. more
