Lady Panthers hold on against Grapeland, struggle late versus Brownsboro

Returning to the hardwood in pre-district action last week was the Bullard Lady Panther basketball team, returning home to the friendly confines of Bullard High School’s Panther Gymnasium for a non-district bout against the Grapeland Lady Sandies Tuesday, Dec. 12.

In the first quarter, the Lady Panthers and Lady Sandies fought hard to influence the flow of early momentum to fall on their side. Bullard took the offensive advantage over their opponent with an offensive performance of 16 points, compared to the 12 points netted by Grapeland.

Both the offensive and defensive game plans for both the Lady Panthers and Lady Sandies were identical in the second quarter of play, as the two teams amassed eight points each.

At the halftime intermission, the teams left the court and headed for the locker rooms with Bullard holding a 24-20 lead over Grapeland.

After returning to the court for the second half of the contest, the Lady Sandies came into the third quarter with strong offensive intensity, as Grapeland outscored Bullard, 16-12.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Panthers prowled ahead, using their sharp offensive claws to swipe at the Lady Sandies for 15 points, while also limiting the opposition’s attack to just 11 points, allowing Bullard to claim the non-district victory against Grapeland, 51-47.

Leading the attack of the Lady Panthers in the contest against the Lady Sandies was senior center Allie Kirgan, collecting a total of 22 points.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Grapeland included sophomore forward Erin Berry, with 12 points, including four three pointers; junior guard Sydney Foster, with eight points; sophomore forward Haley Day, with three points; freshman forward Bailey Smith, with two points; sophomore guard Hailey Minton, with two points; and freshman guard Beverly Howard, with two points.

With the win over the Grapeland Lady Sandies to their credit, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity basketball team took to the road, traveling to take on one of their regional rivals, the Brownsboro Lady Bears Friday, Dec. 15, at Brownsboro High School.

In the opening quarter of play, the offensive units for the Lady Panthers and Lady Bears were evenly matched up, with each team putting up a total of eight points.

The visiting Bullard squad prowled their way ahead of the home team Brownsboro in the second quarter of play, as the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Bears, 8-6. At the halftime intermission, the teams headed into their respective locker rooms with Bullard clinging to a slim 16-14 advantage over Brownsboro.

After returning to the court for the second half of play, the Lady Bears scratched and clawed their way offensively past the Lady Panthers, as Brownsboro scored a total of six points, while Bullard netted four points, tying the contest, 20-20, headed into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, the offensive power of the home team Lady Bears was awaken, snarling and biting at the Lady Panthers’ defense, as Brownsboro outscored Bullard, 13-5, en route to the Lady Bears claiming the win over the Lady Panthers, 33-25.

Once again, the Lady Panthers’ offense was led by the prowl of Kirgan, putting up a total of nine points on the scoreboard against the Lady Bears.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Brownsboro included Berry, with six points, including two three-pointers; Foster, with seven points; and Smith, with three points.

With a 1-1 record last week, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity basketball team currently stands with an overall record of 18-5 on the 2017-2018 season.
